Cone vs McDowell
Vintage Sudden Sam McDowell tell the full story in a must win game 4 for the Bronx Bombers. McDowell, who seems to be on the down side of his career, turned the clock back to his prime when he could blow the fastball by anyone. McDowell fanned 6 on his way to a neat 4 hit shutout. Mike Hegan (2-4, 3 RBI's) made a spot start for his glove and rewarded his mates with a fine day at the bat. Clarke, Murcer and Ron Blomberg all chipped in with 2 hits with the latter also knocking in 2.
Series tied 2-2
GAME 5 - Fenway Park
Medich vs Martinez
Red Sox 5, Yankees 4
A rematch of game one starters saw Sahx managre MacDonald have an "oh crap" moment in the top of the 3rd when Pedro had to leave the game with pain in his throwing elbow. MacDonald went to Rolando Arrojo, who was Pedro like in 4 1/3 innings, where he gave up just 1 run on 4 hits. Boston's bats woke up after yesterday's silencing to make Arrojo's way a bit easier. Offerman hit a solo shot with one out in the bottom of the 3rd. After Nixon reached base off a Horace Clarke error, Carl Everett hit a 2 run shot to make it 3-0. Thurman Munson scored the Yankees first run of the day by tagging up on a long fly from Jim Ray Hart. Boston answered back with 2 more in the bottom of the inning when Nomar hit a 2 run shot. The Yankees looked dead and buried until the top of the 8th when they scored 3 runs to make it a 1 run game. Graig Nettles two out knock plated 2 and had the Fenway faithful thinking another collapse was on it's way. Rod Beck and Rich Garces combined efforts to silence the Yankee bats in the 9th to clinch the series.
